A Journey Through Vancouver’s Nature, Heritage, and Crafts

Overview

An immersive storytelling experience at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) that bridges Indigenous cultures, interactive storytelling, and airport retail. The experience consists of two parts: immersive tunnels located at auto walkways that passively engage the audience through ambient scenes; and storytelling booths located near boarding gates where passengers could actively engage with Indigenous history through an interactive timeline.

Observations

  1. The city, as a major tourist destination, attracts a global audience.

  2. YVR regularly features Indigenous artwork and artifacts as Vancouver’s cultural symbol. However, the form of interaction with these features is often limited.

  3. There is an overall lack of support and recognition for Indigenous brands and businesses. Economic benefits to Indigenous communities should align with Vancouver’s broader societal goals.

Primary Research

  1. YVR has past and ongoing collaborations with Indigenous artists, but falls short on the business and brand collaborations.

  2. The challenge of incorporating new media with airport-specific factors, such as lighting.

  3. Identify and focus on the points of decision-making, such as post-security gathering areas.

  4. Airports can be stressful environments. Passengers only explore when they have enough time before boarding.

  5. Travelers have a desire for authentic experiences and tend to purchase items or souvenirs before departure.
